Radio Controlled Wall Clocks

Radio controlled clocks receive wireless time codes and synchronize to the Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) within a fraction of a second. This technology has been extended to a wide variety of desk clocks, wall clocks and wrist watches that synchronize to radio stations such as WWVB, NIST and similar stations in other countries.

The guaranteed precision in time is the distinguishing feature of a radio controlled clock, and is also the reason why a radio controlled clock commands an edge over the conventional clock. Though radio controlled clocks have been present ever since the existence of radio, the technology was much expensive then. Advancement in technology and low costs of production has made the purchase of a radio controlled clock an affordable one.

Though some believe that the radio controlled clock and an atomic clock are one and the same, here is the reason why the two are different:

  • The radio controlled clock receives the signals from a place which has an atomic clock. The radio controlled clocks have a radio inside.
  • Atomic clocks have an atomic oscillator inside. Such oscillators are usually cesium or rubidium oscillators.
  • The radio controlled clocks decode the signals received from the radio station and synchronizes the time accordingly.
Some commonly known ways to ensure your Radio Controlled Clocks are always in working condition are:
  • Keep clocks away from computers, minimum distance being 1-2 meters.
  • Replace batteries as and when necessary
  • Place the clock in the direction facing the radio station
  • Metal shielding can interfere with the functioning of the clock
  • You can check the timings of your clock vis a vis the radio station through the net or by listening to the radio station.
